Rooftoppers
Another Long week, but more forward progress. Starting the week I ran my first rooftop crew installing shingles. They were great. In an entire day we nearly completed an entire rooftop full of shingles, eyebrow vents and all! I also got to do more soffet work, but this time it was helpful having a tall set of hands.
Training this week we placed concrete for the last two garages for the development. I can't tell you how hard it was. First we had to to put on gloves and special rubber boots so that we could walk through it. Alex and I were responsible for pulling a 2 by 4 across to level the concrete once it was poured. Trudging through concrete is heavy work. Every step I took made this squishing sound nearly sucking my boots right off! Afterward we lay planks like footpaths across the drying concrete and used floaters and trowel for a finishing touch.
The rest of the week was mudding and last touch taping for one the homes getting ready for interior paint. It's nice having big crews to do that or it would take forever. Every day I'm happy to see how new volunteers gain confidence in their skills to do tasks, and this includes mudding. It seems like it should be easy , but having a blade as an extension to your hand is sometimes a hard thing to get used to. I'm glad to say we even got the forgotten utility room with its hard to work with tentacles completed. Thanks Jill!
Lastly,(as a side note) we finally found out the reason for all the short circuits during dinner at the Americorp house. Now we know not to run the toaster and microwave at the same time.
